With the wedding season just around the corner, lots of us will be getting ready to celebrate another happy couple or maybe even walking down the aisle ourselves.
For many couples who are heading to the church or registry office this summer, it won’t be the first time that they’ve tied the knot. We take a look at why, when it comes to marriage, practice really does make perfect.
You know what to expect – the good, the bad and the ugly
Think back to your first wedding day, the expectations you had and the excitement you felt for the future. You had never been married before, you were walking into the unknown and you had to learn along the way.
Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom but the reality is that marriage can be tough at times. When you get married again, you know through first-hand experience that it won’t always be easy. And you’re heading in with your eyes wide open, which in a way, makes it all the more romantic.
You know what you want
The second time round, you’re older, wiser and probably have a clearer idea of what you want out of life.
Getting a divorce can be extremely tough. A lot of soul searching and self-reflection are par for the course. When you meet your next spouse-to-be, chances are that you’ll have a much better idea of what you want and why this person is a good match for you and your life.
You’re not looking for your ‘other half’
You’ve been through a divorce, survived and found someone you want to call your spouse again. The second time round, you aren’t looking for someone to ‘complete you’, but someone who you can spend (and enjoy) your life with.
You
both have a better idea of who you are and love and accept each other, faults
and all – which is a pretty good foundation for a marriage.
A happier marriage second time round?
Of course, there are never any guarantees. But with age and experience comes wisdom and, even in that sense alone, you may already be ahead of all of the first-time brides and grooms.
