Rory McIlroy Calls off engagement to tennis star

Rory McIlroy the world famous golfer has called of his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

The invitations had already been sent out for the lavish ceremony, which was due to take place this year at New York’s famous Rockefeller Centre on November 8^th.

McIlroy 25, and Wozniacki, 23, had been together for two years before the split. They announced their engagement on New Year’s Eve and had been planning the wedding ever since.

“The problem is mine,” McIlroy said in a statement issued by his management. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had.”

The timing of the split is unfortunate; not only was the wedding only months away, both parties are participating in important sporting events. McIlroy is currently at Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship, the European Tour’s flagship event, and Wozniacki was competing in the French Open in Paris. She lost 2-1 against Yanina Wickmayer in the first round of the tournament.

This is a sad story, however, these two may have saved themselves the heartbreak and upheaval of a divorce later down the line.
